Location of SID – Facing east to alert traffic heading west into Bearsted
Example of mini SID
Overview
To help reduce speeding on the A20 BPC propose the installation of a SID on the Ashford Road. A SID is not a speed camera. Its purpose is to give approaching vehicles an accurate visual indication of their speed, in order to educate them and encourage drivers to remain within the speed limit.
It also provides valuable data, such as traffic volumes, average speeds, maximum speeds, etc, although it does not identify individual vehicles or record vehicle registration numbers.
Installation and management
The scheme involves the permanent installation of a galvanised steel post complete with mounting brackets at the shown location. (The existing pole will be replaced)
The location has been carefully selected as the device must be positioned at least 150m inside the speed limit change. The site also needs to meet all safety measures and guidelines set from the Department of Transport.
The scheme collaborates with Detling and Hollingbourne Parish Councils and will be moved between Parishes on an 8 weekly rotation. The SID operations will be carried out by volunteers from each Parish.
Cost
Sharing the SID with our neighbouring Parishes reduces the cost. All areas will contribute equally, share responsibility and hold the SID for the same number of days/weeks on rotation. The initial cost for each Parish is estimated at a maximum of £3500. An annual maintenance spend will also be agreed and shared with a review every 12 months.
